The Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists have joined forces to develop a set of recommendations for saving blood in a fairly lengthy document, but very clearly, that you can see here. (or Ann Thorac Surg 2011; 91: 944-982).
